Tips for an Unbeelievable First Day      The first day of school can cause a great deal of anxiety for both children and parents.  Below you will find some tips to help make the first day easier for everyone. Discuss your child's fears about school, such as:       Who's going to help me?       What if I miss you?       Will the other kids like me?       Will the teacher like me?       What happens if I have to go to the bathroom?       What if I get hungry?       How will I get home? Talk about the fun things your child will get to do at school:             Meet new friends             Play on the playground             Listen to stories             Learn letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and even how to read some                     words!             Play with new toys and games  Be sure that your child has his/her clothes picked out and belongings ready to go the night before school to avoid a morning panic. Try to get your child to bed early.  Most kindergartners need 10 to 12 hours of sleep each night. Discuss with your child how he/she will get home from school so that there are no surprises. Make sure your child eats a nutritious breakfast. Check to be sure your child has lunch money, any paperwork that needs to be turned in, and a note if they will not be riding the bus home. Reassure your child that everything will be all right.  If you have any concerns, let me know. If you bring your child to school, arrive on time but not too early.  A long wait for class to start may increase your child's anxiety. When it's time for school to start, say goodbye and don't linger.  As long as a worried child thinks he/she may be able to leave with mom or dad instead of staying at school, he/she will continue to cry.  Once mom or dad has said goodbye, the child is usually fine.
